The survey findings
Introduction
International students who live in another country have many culture
shocks. Then, we decided to ask people how feel Australian culture. We
interviewed 12 international students included 10 females and 2 males. They are
from Japan, Vietnam and China between 18 and 32 years of age. We asked both
closed ended and open ended questions about habits, foods, weather, language
and transportation.
Summary of results and Discussion of
Findings
We
asked some questions to international students and then we could reveal that
their thinking about Australian culture. 25% of respondents think language is
the most affect thing when they live in Australia, and another 25% think habit
is the most.
Language is essential to communicate with other people, in this
case Australian people speak faster for us so international students may be
doesn’t listen clearly. Furthermore, habit is the one of the important thing
for our life for example in Japan people doesn’t wear shoes in house. It is big
difference and may be cause confused for international students.
Moreover, we asked respondents if you measure Australian culture 1 to 10, what number is the most near your feeling. Half of respondents answered it is 8.
In addition, 60% of respondents feel Australian culture is satisfied, and 40%
of respondents feel neutral.
Actually, culture shock has some steps. Some scholars say
culture shock follows a U-curve pattern. For example, “honeymoon” period is
people feel exciting and fun, then they feel culture shock, after that they
adapt to the new culture and accept differences between own culture and another
culture, and finally their mind become stable.
According to Furham(2012, p.11), culture shock is a confusing experience of suddenly appearing. In addition, Pedersen(1995) claims that culture shock
is a individual experience and not all of the
students feel culture shock, but they can find a lot of culture differences and similarities more.
Almost all our respondents
answered Australian culture is not so big problem, so they can adapt now.
However, as time goes on, they might be feel uncomfortable.
Conclusion
In
conclusion, international students have many types of culture shock like
habits, foods, languages, transportation and clothes. It means Australian
culture is quite different as compared to culture of students’ country. Living in another country and to experience
another culture might be give new perspective for students but sometimes they
feel big stress from different culture. When students have stress because of
culture shock, it is important that they can get rid of problem and accept
culture differences.
